About Origin Effects
The thing about iconic guitar tones throughout music history is that we’re not just hearing the “live” gear. When we spin a classic rock record, we’re also hearing some of the finest analog studio gear available at the time of its recording. Therefore, to really get that sound you need to start diving deep into that rack gear. Thankfully, Origin Effects has already done much of the hard work for us with their extraordinary pedal line. If you want capital “R” rock-in-a-box, Origin has you covered.
It started with a compressor, specifically the Urei 1176 compressor that has long been a fixture in the world's finest recording studios. Using high current, low noise Class-A circuitry, Origin’s founder, Simon Keats was able to create a genuine FET compressor in stompbox form.
His Cali76 compressor has seen many iterations over the years and has gone on to grace the boards of luminaries such as David Gilmour, Graham Coxon, and Ed O’ Brien. For slide players, he created the SlideRig, which stacks two Cali76 together, a trick he learned from old Little Feat and Allman Brothers records. Plainly put, Origin effects compressors thicken up tone like okra in gumbo.
When it comes to re-creating the tone of classic amps, Origin again lived up to their name and traced every sonic nuance back to its original source. Using all-analog technology, Origin succeeded in capturing the sound of some of their favorite Vox, Marshall, and Fender amps of the 50s, 60s, and 70s in pedal form. The Revival Drive features both Valve and Silicon preamp sections, and lets you manipulate characteristics as subtle as negative feedback and “ghost” notes. As the technology evolved over the decades, certain pleasing qualities of older models were eschewed in the name of greater efficiency. With the Revival Drive, Origin has traveled back in time to reclaim what was lost.
Origin Effects just released the BassRIG Super Vintage and BassRIG '64 Black Panel. Both are based on the infamous Amped SVT and Fender Showman/Bassman circuits. The new Bass Rig series brings an all-analog circuitry to the bass world.
We’re very passionate about Origin Effects here at Midwood Guitar Studio and would love to talk with you more about them. It’s hard not to love a pedal that just makes you sound better. That said, they do take some tweaking. Contact us today and we’d be honored to guide you to the tone of your dreams.
