Despite being technologically sophisticated, and intended for boisterous application, many boutique stompboxes have a quaint provenance. In this case, Cornerstone pedals are handmade by a husband-and-wife duo in Italy. Head-designer, Emilio, uses his background as an aerospace engineer to capture the inspiring tones employed by his favorite artists. Process engineer, Linda, sees the pedals through every stage of development before sending them to dealers and players around the world.
The Antique guitar pedal is decidedly in the tube screamer family, but highly tweakable, and voiced with John Mayer’s searing lead tone in mind. This mid-muscle drive enhances articulation and pushes through the mix. The tone knob controls the low-mids and the presence controls the high-mids. Also featured are a mid-cut and a comp switch, the latter of which mostly affects the “feel” of the pedal.
The Gladio V2.1 and it’s single-channel younger brother, the Gladio SC, are guitar preamp pedals that imbue your rig with a dumble-esque harmonic bloom in the vein of Jazz/Rock virtuosos Eric Johnson, Sonny Landreth, and Robben Ford. The double preamp design of the original Gladio allows for a massive amount of subtle tonal variation, while remaining firmly in the sweet spot. The amp-like tube compression contained within these units is simply breathtaking.
When folks call us up looking for specific sounds, it’s best when they have a few recording artists in mind for reference. Thanks to Cornerstone guitar effects, we now have plug-in-and-play solutions for some of the most requested tones. The elusive “Dumble” amps of yore have spawned legions of imitators, but to our ears, Cornerstone comes closest to nailing the raw essence of what made them so great (in pedal form). We’re thrilled to be carrying Cornerstone Pedals at Midwood Guitar Studio and eagerly await their future creations. Give us a call today and we’ll send one of these coveted pedals your way!
