Line 6
Few companies have had as large an impact on the electric guitar industry as Line 6. Marcus Ryle and Michel Doidic were early pioneers in the fledgling field of digital modeling. After developing some groundbreaking DSP (Digital Signal Processing) technology for Pro Audio, Ryle and Doidic began conceiving of DSP applications for electric guitarists. They kept their ideas well guarded until they were ready to go public, using “Line 6” as a code-word because their office only had 5 phone lines.
The first Line 6 products were modeling amplifiers. These sophisticated combos housed digital profiles inspired by all the biggest builders. Rather than haul a Fender, Marshall, and a Vox amplifier to the gig, you could conjure them all with a Line 6. Various iterations of their amps have hit the market since the turn of the 21st century. In 2011, the Spider IV became the best selling amp in America.
Line 6’s biggest success was a low-profile guitar-processor known as The Pod. This bright red kidney-bean housed both amp profiles and effects, proving a secret weapon for guitarists looking to rotate through different tones live. The Pod changed the game and brought digital technology to the forefront of the gear industry. Various versions of The Pod followed, culminating in massive, portable libraries of sound. The green delay and looper known as the DL4 likewise became an instant classic.
The Helix line of multi-effects processors is the latest innovation by Line 6. Not only is the modeling exquisite, the interface is more streamlined and intuitive than ever before. Large color LCD, capacitive-touch footswitches, onboard expression pedals, analog and digital I/O, and deep midi control are just a few of the features offered. Midwood Guitar Studio is proud to be a Line 6 dealer and we look forward to discussing which Helix is right for you!
